Brinjal Mealybug

Coccidohystrix insolita

Sap-Sucking Insects Moderate Risk 3-4 mm (adult female)

📖 Description

Brinjal Mealybug is a major pest of brinjal and other solanaceous vegetables across the Indian subcontinent, particularly severe in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh where brinjal is grown year-round. The pest colonises leaf axils, stems and fruit calyxes, where copious honeydew promotes sooty mold. Heavy infestation can stunt plants and render fruit unmarketable. Outbreaks are favoured by dry weather, excessive nitrogen and misuse of broad-spectrum insecticides that kill natural enemies. The pest has a wide host range including wild malvaceous weeds (Sida, Abutilon, Urena) that serve as reservoirs between cropping cycles. IPM with Cryptolaemus montrouzieri releases, conservation of native parasitoids (Aenasius, Anagyrus), and reduced insecticide use provides effective control. Ant control is essential — ants tend mealybugs for honeydew and actively protect them from natural enemies. Weed management around fields eliminates alternate hosts and reduces initial pest pressure.

⚠️ Symptoms to watch for

  • Yellowing and curling of leaves, stunted plant growth, sooty mold growth on honeydew, white waxy masses on stems and leaf axils, fruit deformation and drop, defoliation in severe cases, yield loss 20-50% in brinjal

🩹 Treatment

  • Conserve native parasitoids and predators, release Cryptolaemus montrouzieri @ 5 beetles per plant, spray neem oil 1% with sticker, remove infested shoots, apply need-based insecticide

🌿 Organic treatments

  • Release Cryptolaemus montrouzieri @ 5-10 adults/plant, spray neem oil 1% + 5 g/L soap, apply Verticillium lecanii @ 5 g/L, spray NSKE 5%, prune and burn infested shoots, control ant colonies, apply Beauveria bassiana @ 5 g/L

🧪 Chemical treatments

  • Buprofezin 25 SC @ 1.5 ml/L, Spiromesifen 240 SC @ 0.5 ml/L, Diafenthiuron 50 WP @ 1 g/L, Chlorpyriphos 20 EC @ 2 ml/L, Imidacloprid 17.8 SL @ 0.3 ml/L, Azadirachtin 10000 ppm @ 2 ml/L

🛡️ Prevention

  • Plant clean nursery stock, rotate crops to break cycle, remove weed hosts (Sida, Abutilon, Urena) around fields, control ants, balanced fertilization, monitor with yellow sticky traps, destroy infested plant debris after harvest

🪴 Affected plants

🔄 Lifecycle

  • Female lays 200-400 eggs in loose ovisac.
  • Eggs hatch in 5-10 days.
  • Nymphs pass through 3 instars (female) over 20-30 days.
  • Adult female lifespan 30-45 days.
  • Total life cycle 30-45 days; 6-10 generations per year.
