Mango Bark Borer
Rhytidodera simulans
📖 Description
Mango Bark Borer is an important wood-boring pest of mango across the Indian subcontinent, particularly damaging in old, poorly managed orchards of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat. The adult beetle lays eggs in bark crevices and wounds; the larva tunnels under the bark and into the wood, causing gum exudation and die-back of branches. Unlike the more destructive mango stem borer (Batocera rufomaculata) which attacks the main trunk, R. simulans typically attacks branches and twigs, causing less catastrophic but chronic damage. The pest is most severe in orchards with poor sanitation, mechanical injuries and excessive shade. IPM with pruning and burning of infested branches, swabbing bore holes with insecticide, and trunk painting with Bordeaux paste provides effective control. Avoidance of mechanical injury during intercultural operations is critical — wounds expose the cambium layer and attract ovipositing females. Maintaining orchard vigour through proper nutrition and irrigation also reduces susceptibility to attack.
⚠️ Symptoms to watch for
- Bark cracking and gum exudation from bore holes, presence of wood frass at base of tree, yellowing of one or more branches, die-back of branches, reduced fruit set, weakening of tree structural integrity, yield loss 15-30%, branch breakage in storms
🩹 Treatment
- Prune and burn infested branches, insert cotton swab soaked in monocrotophos or kerosene into bore hole and plug with mud, apply neem oil 5 ml/L on trunk, use need-based insecticide
🌿 Organic treatments
- Prune infested branches and burn, insert cotton swab with neem oil + kerosene (1:1) into bore hole and plug with mud, apply Beauveria bassiana paste @ 5 g/L into bore hole, paint trunk with neem oil + lime mixture, install light traps @ 1/ha
🧪 Chemical treatments
- Monocrotophos 36 SL @ 5 ml/L (swab bore hole), Chlorpyriphos 20 EC @ 5 ml/L (swab bore hole), Carbaryl 50 WP @ 4 g/L (trunk spray), Imidacloprid 17.8 SL @ 0.5 ml/L (soil drench for systemic action), Acephate 75 SP @ 2 g/L
🛡️ Prevention
- Maintain garden sanitation by pruning infested branches, avoid mechanical injury to bark, paint exposed wounds with Bordeaux paste, install light traps to monitor adults, plant resistant varieties, avoid inter-plot movement of infested planting material
🪴 Affected plants
- Mango, Cashew, Jackfruit, Other Anacardiaceae and Fruit Trees
🦋 Natural predators
- Woodpeckers, Predatory Bugs, Parasitic Wasps (Bracon, Metapelma), Spiders
🌱 Host plants
- Mangifera indica, Anacardium occidentale, Artocarpus heterophyllus
🔄 Lifecycle
- Female lays 50-150 eggs in bark crevices and prune cuts.
- Eggs hatch in 7-12 days.
- Larvae tunnel under bark and into wood, feeding for 90-180 days through 5-6 instars.
- Pupation inside the tunnel, lasting 20-30 days.
- Adult lifespan 30-60 days.
- Total life cycle 120-240 days; 1-2 generations per year.
📅 Season
- Year-round, peaks Mar-Jun and Sep-Nov during active growth
🔎 Appearance
- Adult is a robust longicorn beetle, brownish-grey with characteristic raised ridges and irregular white markings on elytra providing camouflage against bark.
- Antennae longer than body in males.
- Larva is a creamy-white, legless grub with strongly segmented body and brown mandibles.
