Brinjal Ash Weevil

Myllocerus subfasciatus

Borers, Mining & Weevils Insects Moderate Risk 5-7 mm (adult)

📖 Description

Brinjal Ash Weevil (Myllocerus subfasciatus) is a polyphagous pest of brinjal, okra, cotton and other crops across the Indian subcontinent, particularly severe in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra and Gujarat where brinjal and okra are grown year-round. Both adult and larval stages damage the crop — adults feed on leaves at night, creating characteristic ‘window-pane’ or scalloped leaf margins, while larvae feed on roots in the soil, reducing the plant’s ability to absorb water and nutrients. This dual damage (foliar + root) makes M. subfasciatus particularly damaging — even moderate infestations can significantly reduce yield through combined leaf area loss and impaired root function. Outbreaks are favoured by warm moist soil conditions and continuous solanaceous cropping. Adults are nocturnal and hide in soil or under debris during the day, making them difficult to detect without night-time inspection with a flashlight. IPM with soil application of biocontrol (Beauveria, Metarhizium) and neem cake against grubs, foliar sprays and night-time hand-collection against adults, crop rotation with non-host cereals, and deep summer ploughing provides effective control. Conservation of predatory ground beetles (Carabidae) is important — these beetles prey on soil-dwelling larvae and can suppress populations naturally.

⚠️ Symptoms to watch for

  • Adult feeding causes characteristic 'window-pane' or scalloped leaf margins (adults feed on leaf edges at night), yellowing and wilting of plants from root feeding by larvae, stunting and reduced plant vigour, plant death in severe grub infestation, yield loss 20-40%

🩹 Treatment

  • Handpick adults from plants at night (with flashlight), apply neem cake @ 500 kg/ha at planting for grub control, install light traps @ 1/ha for adult monitoring, spray neem oil 5 ml/L on adults, use need-based insecticide when 5 adults per plant

🌿 Organic treatments

  • Apply neem cake @ 500 kg/ha at planting (controls grubs), apply Beauveria bassiana @ 5 g/L to soil for grub control, apply Metarhizium anisopliae @ 5 g/L to soil, hand-collect adults at night with flashlight (place under cloth or paper cone), spray neem oil 5 ml/L + 5 g/L soap on adults, install light traps, conserve predatory ground beetles

🧪 Chemical treatments

  • Chlorpyriphos 20 EC @ 2 ml/L (foliar spray against adults AND soil drench against grubs), Imidacloprid 17.8 SL @ 0.3 ml/L, Quinalphos 25 EC @ 1.5 ml/L, Carbaryl 50 WP @ 4 g/L, Phorate 10G @ 15 kg/ha (soil application at planting for grub control)

🛡️ Prevention

  • Plant clean nursery stock, rotate crops to break cycle (especially with non-host cereals), deep summer ploughing to expose grubs and pupae, hand-collect adults at night, install light traps, destroy weed hosts (Hibiscus, Sida, Abutilon) around fields, plant resistant varieties, apply neem cake at planting

🪴 Affected plants

  • Brinjal, Bhendi (Okra), Cotton, Castor, Mungbean, Blackgram, Pulses, Hibiscus, Drumstick, Various Weeds

🦋 Natural predators

  • Ground Beetles (Carabidae), Spiders, Predatory Bugs, Birds, Parasitic Wasps, Frogs

🌱 Host plants

  • Solanum melongena, Abelmoschus esculentus, Gossypium hirsutum, Ricinus communis, Vigna radiata, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis

🔄 Lifecycle

  • Female lays 100-300 eggs in soil at plant base.
  • Eggs hatch in 5-8 days.
  • Larvae feed on roots for 30-45 days through 4 instars.
  • Pupation in soil, lasting 7-12 days.
  • Adult lifespan 60-120 days.
  • Total life cycle 45-75 days; 3-5 generations per year.
  • Adults active mainly at night, hide in soil during day.

📅 Season

  • Year-round, peaks Mar-Jun and Sep-Nov during warm humid months

🔎 Appearance

  • Adult is a small, broad, greyish-white weevil covered with fine greyish scales; has a short, broad snout and elbowed antennae.
  • Elytra have characteristic dark brown irregular bands and a white waxy bloom giving 'ashy' appearance.
  • Larvae are white, legless, C-shaped grubs with brown head capsule, living in soil where they feed on roots.
