Mushroom Phorid Fly

Megaselia halterata (Wood)

Borers, Mining & Weevils Insects Moderate Risk 1.5-2.5 mm wingspan (adult); 3-4 mm (mature larva)

📖 Description

Mushroom Phorid Fly (Megaselia halterata — the Humpbacked Mushroom Fly) is a serious dipteran pest of cultivated mushrooms across the Indian subcontinent and worldwide. Particularly severe in the major mushroom-growing belts of India (Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Jammu & Kashmir). India’s mushroom industry produces over 70,000 tonnes annually with a market value of over ₹2,000 crore per year. The pest is unusual among mushroom pests because (a) it is highly attracted to the smell of mushroom mycelium — flies can detect mushroom houses from a long distance and rapidly infest new mushroom crops, (b) the larva feeds exclusively on mushroom mycelium — directly reducing mushroom initiation (a single larva can consume enough mycelium to reduce mushroom yield by 5-10 g), (c) the larva is a vector of Mushroom Verticillium Disease (dry bubble) and mushroom viruses — making it a vector of multiple serious mushroom diseases, (d) the pest has a short life cycle (14-21 days at 20-25°C) allowing 10-15 overlapping generations per year in mushroom houses — a single female lays 50-100 eggs, allowing rapid population buildup, (e) the adult fly is a major nuisance in mushroom houses — swarming around workers and equipment, contaminating mushrooms with fly bodies, and reducing worker productivity, and (f) the adult fly’s characteristic humpbacked appearance and rapid zigzag running gait (before flying) distinguish it from the Mushroom Sciarid Fly. IPM with properly sterilised compost and casing soil, insect-proof screening, yellow sticky trap monitoring, biological control (Hypoaspis predatory mites, Steinernema nematodes, Metarhizium fungus), need-based insecticide rotation (Diflubenzuron, Cyromazine, Spinosad), strict mushroom house hygiene, and disposal of spent substrate provides effective control.

⚠️ Symptoms to watch for

  • Direct feeding damage on mushroom mycelium (causes 'missing mycelium' patches in the casing soil — reduces mushroom initiation)
  • reduced mushroom yield (20-40% yield loss in severely affected mushroom crops)
  • transmission of Mushroom Verticillium Disease (Verticillium fungicola — causes dry bubble disease)
  • transmission of mushroom viruses (La France Virus Complex — causes malformed mushrooms and reduced yield)
  • nuisance problem in mushroom houses (adult flies swarm around workers and equipment — reduces worker productivity and contaminates mushrooms with fly bodies)

🩹 Treatment

  • Install yellow sticky traps @ 4/100 m² of mushroom house for monitoring adult flies
  • screen mushroom house ventilators with insect-proof mesh (mesh size <0.5 mm — prevents fly entry)
  • sterilise mushroom compost and casing soil properly (Phase II pasteurisation at 60°C for 8-12 hours kills eggs, larvae and pupae)
  • apply predatory mites (Hypoaspis miles — feed on larvae in casing soil)
  • do not over-water the casing soil

🌿 Organic treatments

  • Install yellow sticky traps @ 4/100 m² for mass trapping adult flies
  • apply predatory mites Hypoaspis miles @ 500/m² of casing soil (highly effective — feed on larvae and pupae)
  • apply predatory mites Stratiolaelaps scimitus @ 500/m² (effective — feed on larvae)
  • apply Steinernema feltiae entomopathogenic nematodes @ 1 million/m² of casing soil (effective — kill larvae)
  • apply entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae @ 5 g/L on casing soil (effective — kills larvae and pupae)
  • apply entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana @ 5 g/L
  • screen mushroom house ventilators with insect-proof mesh (mesh size <0.5 mm)
  • maintain dry casing surface
  • do not over-water the casing soil
  • sterilise mushroom compost and casing soil properly
  • use clean certified spawn
  • dispose of spent mushroom substrate away from mushroom houses
  • apply neem oil @ 5 ml/L on casing surface

🧪 Chemical treatments

  • Diflubenzuron 25 WP @ 1 g/L on casing soil (insect growth regulator — most effective against larvae, safe to mushroom crop)
  • Cyromazine 75 WP @ 0.5 g/L on casing soil (insect growth regulator — highly effective against larvae, low mammalian toxicity)
  • Spinosad 240 SC @ 1 ml/L on casing soil (effective against larvae — low mammalian toxicity)
  • Azadirachtin 1% EC @ 2 ml/L on casing soil
  • Lambda-Cyhalothrin 5 EC @ 0.5 ml/L as a fog treatment (target — adult flies — apply only between mushroom flushes)
  • Dichlorvos 76 EC @ 1 ml/L as a fog treatment (effective against adult flies — apply only in empty mushroom houses — restricted use due to mammalian toxicity) — always apply with appropriate PPE
  • observe withholding period before mushrooms are harvested
  • rotate modes of action

🛡️ Prevention

  • Use properly sterilised mushroom compost and casing soil (Phase II pasteurisation at 60°C for 8-12 hours — most critical preventive measure)
  • use clean certified spawn
  • screen mushroom house ventilators with insect-proof mesh (mesh size <0.5 mm)
  • install yellow sticky traps @ 4/100 m² for early detection
  • seal cracks and crevices in mushroom house structure
  • maintain dry casing surface
  • do not over-water the casing soil
  • maintain mushroom house temperature and humidity at optimal levels
  • practice strict hygiene in and around the mushroom house
  • dispose of spent mushroom substrate at least 100 m away from mushroom houses
  • do not store fresh compost or manure near mushroom houses
  • use footbaths and disinfectant sprays at mushroom house entry
  • do not introduce material from other mushroom houses without quarantine
  • Rogue out and destroy any heavily infested mushroom bags/trays
  • apply preventive predatory mite treatment to casing soil at spawning

🪴 Affected plants

  • Cultivated Mushrooms (primary host — Agaricus bisporus white button mushroom, Pleurotus spp. oyster mushroom)
  • Wild Mushrooms
  • Mushroom Compost
  • Mushroom Casing Soil

🦋 Natural predators

  • Predatory mites
  • (Hypoaspis miles — highly effective; Stratiolaelaps scimitus — effective)
  • entomopathogenic nematodes (Steinernema feltiae — effective)
  • entomopathogenic fungi
  • (Metarhizium anisopliae — effective; Beauveria bassiana — effective)
  • rove beetles (Atheta — limited efficacy in mushroom houses)
  • spiders (limited efficacy in mushroom houses)

🌱 Host plants

  • Agaricus bisporus (white button mushroom — primary host)
  • Pleurotus spp. (oyster mushroom)
  • Volvariella volvacea (paddy straw mushroom)
  • wild mushrooms
  • mushroom compost
  • mushroom casing soil

🔄 Lifecycle

  • Adult female lays 50-100 eggs singly or in small groups on the casing soil surface or on mushroom mycelium.
  • Egg incubation 2-4 days.
  • Larva passes through 3 instars over 7-12 days in the casing soil — feeding on mycelium.
  • Larva pupates in the casing soil.
  • Pupal period 4-6 days.
  • Adult lifespan 7-14 days; female may lay 50-100 eggs in her lifetime.
  • Total life cycle 14-21 days at 20-25°C; 10-15 overlapping generations per year in mushroom houses.

📅 Season

  • Active year-round in environmentally controlled mushroom houses; peaks Apr-Sep (warm conditions most favourable for fly development and outdoor fly pressure is highest)

🔎 Appearance

  • Adult is a tiny, robust, dark brownish-black fly (family Phoridae — humpbacked fly); head small, rounded; thorax humpbacked (characteristic — gives the family its common name); legs stout with enlarged hind femora (characteristic — phorid flies run rapidly with characteristic 'zigzag' gait before flying); wings transparent with characteristic reduced venation (only a few longitudinal veins — no cross-veins); body covered with fine dark hairs.
  • Larva is a small, translucent-white, slender maggot with a small head capsule; body cylindrical, legless, tapering posteriorly; reaches up to 4 mm length.
  • The larva characteristically feeds on mushroom mycelium — making infestations difficult to detect until reduced mushroom yield appears.
  • Pupa is small, dark brown, in the casing soil.
