Ber Fruit Fly

Carpomyia vesuviana

Borers, Mining & Weevils Insects Severe Risk 5-7 mm

📖 Description

Ber Fruit Fly is the most destructive pest of ber (Indian jujube) across the Indian subcontinent, particularly damaging in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra ber-growing belts. The female punctures the fruit skin and lays eggs inside — maggots hatch and feed internally, causing fruit rot and drop. Untreated orchards can suffer 50-80% fruit loss, especially in late-ripening varieties. Unlike mango and cucurbit fruit flies, no sex pheromone lure is commercially available for Ber Fruit Fly, making fruit bagging and sanitation the primary management tools. The pest has a narrow host range (only Ziziphus species), which simplifies area-wide management. The pest is most severe during the ber fruiting season (October-February).

⚠️ Symptoms to watch for

  • Puncture marks on fruit surface, fruit softening and yellowing around puncture, premature fruit drop, internal maggot infestation, fruit rotting with foul smell, fruit becoming pulpy and unmarketable, yield loss 40-80%

🩹 Treatment

  • Bag fruits with paper bags at marble stage, install Yellow Sticky Traps @ 10/ha for monitoring, apply poison bait spray (Dichlorvos + jaggery) on foliage of adjacent trap crop, collect and destroy fallen infested fruits, harvest fruits at mature-green stage

🌿 Organic treatments

  • Fruit bagging at marble stage (most effective for high-value varieties), Yellow Sticky Traps @ 10/ha, bait spray with Spinosad 45 SC @ 0.25 ml/L + jaggery 1%, collect and destroy fallen infested fruits by deep burying, apply neem oil 5 ml/L at fruit initiation

🧪 Chemical treatments

  • Dichlorvos 76 EC @ 1 ml/L + jaggery 1% (bait spray), Lambda-cyhalothrin 5 EC @ 0.5 ml/L, Spinosad 45 SC @ 0.25 ml/L, Cyantraniliprole 10 OD @ 1 ml/L, Dimethoate 30 EC @ 1 ml/L — apply at fruit initiation + 2 sprays at 15-day intervals

🛡️ Prevention

  • Fruit bagging at marble stage, collect and destroy all fallen infested fruits, harvest at mature-green stage, avoid mixed planting of fruit fly hosts (guava, citrus), grow tolerant varieties (Umran, Gola, Seb), prune trees to open canopy (discourages flies), deep summer ploughing to expose pupae

🪴 Affected plants

  • Ber (Indian Jujube), Ziziphus species

🦋 Natural predators

  • Ants (predators of pupae in soil), Spiders, Opius (larval parasitoid), Birds, Predatory Bugs

🌱 Host plants

  • Ziziphus mauritiana, Ziziphus jujuba, Ziziphus nummularia

🔄 Lifecycle

  • Female lays 50-150 eggs in clusters under fruit skin.
  • Eggs hatch in 2-4 days.
  • Maggots feed inside fruit for 8-14 days through 3 instars.
  • Pupation in soil, lasting 10-20 days.
  • Adult lifespan 30-60 days.
  • Total life cycle 25-40 days; 5-7 overlapping generations per year.

📅 Season

  • October-February (ber fruiting season), peaks Nov-Jan

🔎 Appearance

  • Adult is a small brownish-yellow fly with characteristic brown spots on wings (giving it the appearance of a wasp).
  • Maggots are creamy-white, legless larvae with a pointed head.
  • Eggs are white, banana-shaped, laid under fruit skin.

  • Severe

🔁 Reproduction rate

  • Rapid
