Leaf Miners
Various (Diptera & Lepidoptera)
📖 Description
Leaf miners are the larvae of small flies, moths, or sawflies that feed between the upper and lower surfaces of leaves, creating distinctive trails or blotches. While the damage is usually cosmetic and rarely kills plants, severe infestations can reduce photosynthesis enough to weaken the plant and reduce crop yields. The feeding trails are actually the larva’s waste product pushed behind it as it tunnels through leaf tissue. Because they feed inside the leaf, leaf miners are protected from most contact insecticides.
⚠️ Symptoms to watch for
- Winding white or translucent trails in leaves,Blotch-like mines between leaf surfaces,Brown or papery spots in affected areas,Tiny black fly specks along mine trails,Premature leaf drop in severe cases
🩹 Treatment
- Remove and destroy affected leaves (organic),Release parasitic wasps (Diglyphus isaea) (organic),Apply spinosad spray to leaf surfaces (organic),Use yellow sticky traps to catch adult flies (organic),Apply systemic abamectin (chemical),Spray with permethrin when adults are active (chemical)
🌿 Organic treatments
- Remove and destroy affected leaves,Release parasitic wasps (Diglyphus isaea),Apply spinosad spray to leaf surfaces,Use yellow sticky traps to catch adult flies
🧪 Chemical treatments
- Apply systemic abamectin,Spray with permethrin when adults are active
🛡️ Prevention
- Use floating row covers on susceptible crops,Remove crop debris and weeds that host leaf miners,Rotate crops to break pest cycles,Monitor with yellow sticky traps for early detection,Choose resistant varieties when available
🪴 Affected plants
- Citrus Trees,Spinach,Chard,Tomatoes,Holly,Birch,Columbine
🦋 Natural predators
- Parasitic Wasps,Birds,Spiders
🌱 Host plants
- Citrus spp.,Solanum lycopersicum,Spinacia oleracea
🔄 Lifecycle
- Adult flies puncture leaf surfaces and lay eggs inside.
- Eggs hatch in 2-4 days.
- Larvae mine through leaf tissue for 1-3 weeks, then cut a hole and drop to soil to pupate.
- Pupation takes 1-2 weeks.
- Adults emerge and live for 1-2 weeks.
- Multiple generations per year, with continuous reproduction in warm climates.
📅 Season
- Spring to Fall
🔎 Appearance
- Larvae are tiny, pale yellow or green maggots that live inside leaves.
- Adults are small flies or moths.
- The most visible sign is the winding trails or blotches in leaves.

- Low
🔁 Reproduction rate
- Fast
