Onion Thrips (Indian Population)
Thrips tabaci
📖 Description
Onion Thrips is the most damaging insect pest of onion and garlic across the Indian subcontinent, particularly in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan. Both adults and larvae feed by rasping plant tissue and sucking out cell contents, causing silvery feeding scars, white flecking, leaf distortion, and reduced bulb size. Onion thrips also transmit Iris Yellow Spot Virus (IYSV) and other tospoviruses that can devastate onion crops. The pest’s tiny size, hidden feeding between leaves, and rapid development of insecticide resistance make management exceptionally challenging. Outbreaks are favored by hot, dry conditions and continuous onion cultivation. Integrated management combining sticky traps, biological control, judicious chemical rotation, adequate irrigation, and crop rotation is essential.
⚠️ Symptoms to watch for
- Silvery feeding scars on leaves
- white flecking on leaf surfaces
- curled and distorted leaves
- deformed and undersized bulbs
- premature senescence and lodging of leaves
- reduced bulb size and quality
- transmission of Iris Yellow Spot Virus and other tospoviruses
- yield loss 30-70%
🩹 Treatment
- Install blue sticky traps @ 10/ha
- apply neem oil 5ml/L with sticker
- release predatory mites
- use recommended insecticides at early infestation
- conserve natural enemies
🌿 Organic treatments
- Install blue sticky traps @ 10/ha
- apply neem oil 5 ml/L with sticker
- release predatory mites (Amblyseius swirskii)
- apply Lecanicillium lecanii @ 5 g/L
- spray 5% NSKE
- intercrop with carrots or marigold to attract predators
- apply Beauveria bassiana @ 5 g/L
- maintain adequate irrigation to suppress outbreaks
🧪 Chemical treatments
- Spinosad 45 SC @ 0.5 ml/L
- Abamectin 1.9 EC @ 0.5 ml/L
- Fipronil 5 SC @ 1 ml/L
- Imidacloprid 17.8 SL @ 0.3 ml/L
- Lambda-cyhalothrin 5 EC @ 1 ml/L
- (rotate modes of action; resistance widespread)
🛡️ Prevention
- Inspect inner leaf surfaces weekly
- install blue sticky traps early
- use resistant varieties where available
- maintain adequate irrigation (thrips thrive in dry conditions)
- intercrop with carrots or marigold to enhance predator habitat
- control weeds around fields
- practice crop rotation with non-hosts
- remove and destroy infested plant parts
- conserve predatory mites and bugs by avoiding broad-spectrum insecticides
