Peach-Potato Aphid
Myzus persicae
📖 Description
Peach-Potato Aphid (Myzus persicae) is the most important aphid vector of plant viruses worldwide and a major constraint to potato, tobacco, vegetables and oilseed production across the Indian subcontinent, particularly severe in potato belts of Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Punjab, Bihar, Gujarat and Karnataka. The pest is extraordinarily polyphagous, attacking over 400 plant species across 50+ families, and transmits more than 100 plant viruses — including Potato Leafroll Virus (PLRV), Potato Virus Y (PVY), Cucumber Mosaic Virus (CMV), Beet Yellows Virus and many others. Unlike direct feeding damage (which is usually modest), the indirect damage from virus transmission is devastating — once a plant is infected with PLRV or PVY, it cannot be cured and must be rogued to prevent secondary spread. The pest has developed resistance to virtually all major insecticide classes (organophosphates, carbamates, pyrethroids, neonicotinoids), making resistance management critical — rotate across modes of action and use selective insecticides (Pymetrozine, Flonicamid, Spirotetramat) that have lower impact on natural enemies. IPM with virus-free seed, early rogueing of infected plants, conservation of natural enemies (Aphidius colemani parasitoid, syrphid flies, coccinellids), and need-based selective insecticide use provides effective control.
⚠️ Symptoms to watch for
- Yellowing and curling of leaves
- stunted plant growth
- sooty mold on honeydew
- leaf distortion
- transmission of 100+ plant viruses including Potato Leafroll Virus (PLRV)
- Potato Virus Y (PVY)
- Cucumber Mosaic Virus (CMV)
- Beet Yellows Virus
- yield loss 20-50% in virus-affected crops
🩹 Treatment
- Conserve natural enemies (coccinellids, syrphids, parasitoids)
- apply neem oil 5 ml/L
- use need-based systemic insecticide when 50 aphids per plant or 5 per leaf
- rogue virus-infected plants immediately
🌿 Organic treatments
- Neem oil 5 ml/L + 5 g/L soap
- release Aphidius colemani @ 5000/ha (parasitoid)
- apply Verticillium lecanii @ 5 g/L
- spray NSKE 5%
- release Menochilus sexmaculatus @ 5 grubs/m2
- conserve syrphid flies by flowering border crops
🧪 Chemical treatments
- Imidacloprid 17.8 SL @ 0.3 ml/L
- Thiamethoxam 25 WG @ 0.2 g/L
- Acetamiprid 20 SP @ 0.2 g/L
- Pymetrozine 50 WG @ 0.5 g/L (selective to aphids)
- Spirotetramat 240 SC @ 0.6 ml/L (systemic)
- Flonicamid 50 WG @ 0.4 g/L
🛡️ Prevention
- Plant virus-free certified seed potatoes
- rogue virus-infected plants immediately
- control weed hosts (Capella, Chenopodium, Solanum nigrum)
- plant early to escape peak aphid buildup
- use yellow sticky traps @ 10/ha
- plant resistant varieties (Kufri Surya, Kufri Himalini)
- avoid excess nitrogen

🔄 Lifecycle
- Parthenogenetic viviparous reproduction on summer hosts — females produce 50-100 nymphs each.
- Nymphs pass through 4 instars in 5-8 days.
- Adult lifespan 15-30 days.
- Total life cycle 7-12 days.
- 20-30 overlapping generations per year.
- Sexual reproduction on peach (primary host) in temperate regions; tropical populations entirely parthenogenetic.
📅 Season
- Year-round in tropical India, peaks Nov-Mar (rabi potato/vegetables) and Mar-Jun (spring vegetables)
🔎 Appearance
- Adult female is variable in colour — pale yellowish-green to dark green, pinkish or reddish; body is oval and somewhat pear-shaped with prominent dark cornicles.
- Winged forms have a dark head and thorax with green abdomen.
- Colonies cluster on undersides of leaves and tender growth.
