Pink Hibiscus Mealybug
Maconellicoccus hirsutus
📖 Description
Pink Hibiscus Mealybug (PHM), native to South Asia, is a highly polyphagous pest attacking over 300 plant species. It has spread to Africa, the Americas, and the Pacific, becoming invasive in many regions. The pest injects toxic saliva while feeding, causing characteristic crinkling, twisting, and stunting of new growth even at low populations. Heavy infestations can kill young plants and severely reduce yields of cotton, okra, and hibiscus. Classical biological control with the predator Cryptolaemus montrouzieri has been highly successful across India.
⚠️ Symptoms to watch for
- Crinkled
- twisted
- and stunted new growth
- bunchy tops on terminals
- white cottony masses on shoots and leaf axils
- distorted leaves and flowers
- sooty mold on honeydew
- dieback of branches
🩹 Treatment
- Release Cryptolaemus montrouzieri beetles @ 10 per plant
- spray neem oil 5ml/L with sticker
- apply insecticidal soap
- prune and destroy infested shoots
- use systemic insecticides when infestation is heavy
🌿 Organic treatments
- Release Cryptolaemus montrouzieri (mealybug destroyer) @ 10/plant
- spray neem oil 5ml/L + sticker
- apply Lecanicillium lecanii @ 5g/L
- prune and burn infested shoots
- spray 5% NSKE (neem seed kernel extract)
🧪 Chemical treatments
- Imidacloprid 17.8 SL @ 0.5 ml/L as foliar or soil drench
- Buprofezin 25 SC @ 2 ml/L
- Dimethoate 30 EC @ 1.5 ml/L
- Acephate 75 SP @ 1 g/L
🛡️ Prevention
- Inspect new plants before planting
- prune infested shoots regularly
- avoid excessive nitrogen
- conserve ladybird beetles and lacewings
- avoid broad-spectrum insecticides that kill natural enemies
- remove alternate weed hosts like Sida and Abutilon
