Red Palm Weevil
Rhynchophorus ferrugineus
📖 Description
Red Palm Weevil (RPW) is the most destructive pest of palms in the Indian subcontinent and across the tropical world, having spread from Asia to the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and the Americas. Adult female weevils lay eggs in wounds or crevices on the palm trunk. The cream-colored legless grubs bore into the soft tissue of the crown and trunk, feeding internally and causing extensive tunneling. By the time external symptoms appear, internal damage is often severe enough that the tree cannot be saved. Coconut plantations across peninsular India and date palm groves in Rajasthan and Gujarat suffer heavy losses. The pest is a major invasive threat to ornamental and landscape palms worldwide.
⚠️ Symptoms to watch for
- Yellowing and wilting of inner leaves, oozing of brown viscous liquid from holes in the trunk, dried and broken fronds, chewed fiber at the crown base, foul odor from decaying tissue, toppling of the crown in advanced stages and tree death
🩹 Treatment
- Inject carbaryl 50 WP suspension into tunnels and plug with mud, use pheromone (ferrugineol) traps @ 1/ha for mass trapping, drench crown with imidacloprid, remove and destroy severely infested palms
🌿 Organic treatments
- Install pheromone (ferrugineol) traps @ 1/ha with kairomone bait, inject Bacillus thuringiensis or Steinernema carpocapsae entomopathogenic nematodes into tunnels, coat crown with neem oil 5ml/L, remove and burn infested palms, apply Metarhizium anisopliae dust to crown
🧪 Chemical treatments
- Inject Carbaryl 50 WP @ 20g/L into tunnels and plug holes, crown drench with Imidacloprid 17.8 SL @ 5 ml/L, Chlorpyrifos 20 EC @ 5 ml/L crown drench, Fipronil 5 SC @ 4 ml/L
🛡️ Prevention
- Inspect palms before planting, avoid injuries to trunk and crown, seal wounds with tar or Bordeaux paste, install pheromone traps around plantations, practice field sanitation by removing and burning infested palms, quarantine movement of palms from infested areas, treat cut frond bases with Bordeaux paste

- Eggs hatch in 2-5 days.
- Larvae feed internally for 2-4 months, passing through 8-13 instars.
- Pupation occurs in a fibrous cocoon at the base of the crown or in the trunk, lasting 2-4 weeks.
