Soft Scale
Coccidae
📖 Description
Soft scale insects are members of the family Coccidae, one of the largest families of scale insects with over 1,000 described species worldwide. Unlike armored scales, soft scales retain their waxy covering as an integral part of their body and excrete large amounts of honeydew, which attracts ants and promotes sooty mold growth. Their feeding weakens plants by draining nutrients from the phloem, and heavy infestations can cause significant dieback. Many species are common pests of ornamental plants, greenhouse crops, and indoor houseplants, where they are protected from natural enemies.
⚠️ Symptoms to watch for
- Sticky honeydew coating on leaves and surfaces below
- Black sooty mold growing on honeydew
- Yellowing leaves and premature leaf drop
- Small brown or tan dome-shaped bumps on stems
- Stunted growth and reduced vigor
🩹 Treatment
- Scrape off scales manually with a soft brush or cloth (organic)
- Apply horticultural oil to suffocate crawlers and adults (organic)
- Release parasitic wasps such as Metaphycus spp. for biological control (organic)
- Apply systemic dinotefuran or imidacloprid as a soil drench (chemical)
🌿 Organic treatments

🧪 Chemical treatments
- Apply systemic dinotefuran or imidacloprid as a soil drench
🛡️ Prevention
- Inspect new plants thoroughly before introducing to the garden or home
- Maintain plant health with proper watering and fertilization
- Encourage natural predators like lady beetles and parasitic wasps
- Apply dormant oil in late winter to smother overwintering scales

🔄 Lifecycle
- Most soft scale species have one generation per year in temperate regions, overwintering as fertilized females or second-instar nymphs.
- In spring, females resume feeding, grow rapidly, and lay hundreds to thousands of eggs beneath their body.
- Crawlers emerge in late spring to early summer, settle on new growth, and feed through the summer.
- Some species are parthenogenetic, reproducing without males.
📅 Season
- Year-round indoors; Spring to Fall outdoors
🔎 Appearance
- Soft scale insects are small, oval to半球形 (hemispherical) insects covered with a smooth, waxy dome that is firmly attached to their body, unlike the detachable cover of armored scales.
- Colors range from brown and tan to greenish or gray, often with a glossy or sticky surface.
- They cluster along stems and leaf midribs, sometimes appearing as small bumps or droplets on plant surfaces.
- When crushed, they exude a wet, orange to yellow fluid rather than a dry powdery substance.
