Striped Mealybug
Ferrisia virgata
📖 Description
Striped Mealybug is a polyphagous pest of fruit trees, cotton and vegetables across the Indian subcontinent, particularly damaging in guava orchards of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh, and in cotton belts of Maharashtra, Gujarat and Punjab. The characteristic two dark stripes distinguish it from other mealybugs. The pest prefers tender flush and fruit clusters, where copious honeydew promotes sooty mold that downgrades fruit. Like other mealybugs, F. virgata is tended by ants which protect it from natural enemies and facilitate dispersal between plants. Classical biological control with Cryptolaemus montrouzieri and conservation of native parasitoids (Anagyrus, Leptomastix) form the backbone of sustainable management. The pest is also a vector of several plant viruses in cocoa and citrus, making its control critical in mixed-cropping systems. Quarantine of nursery stock is essential — most new infestations originate from infested planting material.
⚠️ Symptoms to watch for
- Yellowing and curling of leaves
- stunted shoot growth
- sooty mold growth on honeydew
- white waxy masses on fruits and stems
- fruit drop and deformation
- defoliation in severe cases
- transmission of Cocoa Swollen Shoot Virus and Citrus Tristeza Virus
- yield loss 20-40%
🩹 Treatment
- Conserve native parasitoids and predators
- release Cryptolaemus montrouzieri @ 5 beetles per tree
- spray neem oil 1% with sticker
- prune infested shoots
- apply need-based insecticide
🌿 Organic treatments
- Release Cryptolaemus montrouzieri @ 5-10 adults/tree
- spray neem oil 1% + 5 g/L soap
- apply Verticillium lecanii @ 5 g/L
- spray NSKE 5%
- apply Beauveria bassiana @ 5 g/L
- prune and burn infested shoots
- control ant colonies
🧪 Chemical treatments
- Buprofezin 25 SC @ 1.5 ml/L
- Spiromesifen 240 SC @ 0.5 ml/L
- Diafenthiuron 50 WP @ 1 g/L
- Chlorpyriphos 20 EC @ 2 ml/L
- Imidacloprid 17.8 SL @ 0.3 ml/L (soil drench)
- Azadirachtin 10000 ppm @ 2 ml/L
