Sweet Potato Weevil

Cylas formicarius

Borers, Mining & Weevils Insects Severe Risk 5-7 mm (adult)

📖 Description

Sweet Potato Weevil (Cylas formicarius) is the most destructive pest of sweet potato worldwide and the single biggest constraint to sweet potato production across the Indian subcontinent, particularly severe in Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Assam and Tamil Nadu where sweet potato is grown on over 130,000 hectares. The weevil is unusual in having a markedly ant-like appearance (orange-red head and thorax, dark blue-black elytra, elongated snout) — this ‘formicarius’ (ant-like) resemblance provides some protection from predators through mimicry. Both adults and larvae damage the crop — adults feed on vines and leaves, while larvae bore into tubers and vines, causing characteristic tunnelled damage with frass. The pest also induces production of toxic terpenoids in infested tubers — these compounds give infested tubers a bitter taste and can cause illness if consumed, making infested tubers unsafe for both human and livestock consumption. IPM with pest-free vine cuttings (the single most important preventive measure — most new infestations originate from infested planting material), sex pheromone traps for mass trapping of males (one of the most successful IPM programs in tropical root crops), Beauveria bassiana soil applications, early harvest, and removal of infested plants provides effective and sustainable control. The pest is most severe in continuous sweet potato cultivation and in areas where wild Ipomoea hosts serve as reservoirs between cropping cycles.

⚠️ Symptoms to watch for

  • Yellowing and wilting of vines
  • dark-coloured tunnelled areas on tubers with frass exuding
  • characteristic terpenoid odour and bitter taste of infested tubers
  • tuber rotting from secondary infection
  • complete crop loss in severe infestation
  • infested tubers unmarketable and unsafe for consumption

🩹 Treatment

  • Use pest-free vine cuttings for planting
  • install sex pheromone traps @ 25/ha for monitoring and mass trapping
  • apply need-based insecticide at 30 and 45 DAP
  • remove and destroy infested plants and tubers
  • harvest early to avoid late-stage damage

🌿 Organic treatments

  • Use pest-free vine cuttings (cut from tips of healthy plants)
  • install sex pheromone traps @ 25/ha for mass trapping of males
  • apply Beauveria bassiana @ 5 g/L to soil and vines
  • apply Metarhizium anisopliae @ 5 g/L to soil
  • apply neem oil 5 ml/L on vines
  • remove and destroy infested plants and tubers
  • harvest early to escape late-stage damage
  • plant resistant varieties

🧪 Chemical treatments

  • Imidacloprid 17.8 SL @ 0.3 ml/L (foliar spray)
  • Chlorpyriphos 20 EC @ 2 ml/L (foliar spray AND soil drench)
  • Carbaryl 50 WP @ 4 g/L (foliar spray)
  • Quinalphos 25 EC @ 1.5 ml/L (foliar spray)
  • Bifenthrin 10 EC @ 1 ml/L (foliar spray) — apply at 30
  • 45 and 60 DAP

🛡️ Prevention

  • Use pest-free vine cuttings (the single most important preventive measure)
  • install sex pheromone traps @ 25/ha for mass trapping of males
  • plant resistant varieties (with high dry matter content)
  • harvest early (90-100 DAP) to avoid late-stage damage
  • remove and destroy infested plants and tubers
  • destroy wild Ipomoea hosts around fields
  • deep plough after harvest to expose pupae
  • practice 2-3 year crop rotation with non-host crops

🪴 Affected plants

  • Sweet Potato
  • Wild Ipomoea
  • Other Convolvulaceae

🦋 Natural predators

  • Beauveria bassiana (fungal pathogen)
  • Metarhizium anisopliae
  • Ground Beetles (Carabidae)
  • Spiders
  • Predatory Bugs
  • Ants

🌱 Host plants

  • Ipomoea batatas
  • Ipomoea aquatica
  • Ipomoea pes-caprae
  • Ipomoea triloba

🔄 Lifecycle

  • Female lays 100-250 eggs singly in cavities chewed into vines or tubers.
  • Eggs hatch in 5-7 days.
  • Larvae bore into vines and tubers, feeding for 14-25 days through 3 instars.
  • Pupation inside tubers or vines in silken cocoon, lasting 5-8 days.
  • Adult lifespan 75-100 days.
  • Total life cycle 30-45 days; 4-6 overlapping generations per year.

📅 Season

  • Year-round in tropical conditions, peaks during dry months (Mar-Jun and Oct-Dec)

🔎 Appearance

  • Adult is a small, distinctive ant-like weevil with a markedly elongated snout; head and thorax are orange-red, elytra are dark blue-black metallic, legs are orange-red with darker femora.
  • Resembles a large ant (hence species name 'formicarius' = ant-like).
  • Larvae are white, legless, C-shaped grubs with brown head capsule, developing inside tubers and vines.
