Rai Mangrove
Rhizophora mucronata
📖 About this plant
Rhizophora mucronata (red mangrove or ‘Rai’ in Odia) is a large mangrove tree of the Rhizophoraceae family. The tree produces distinctive stilt roots (aerial roots from the trunk) for stability in soft mangrove mud, and large viviparous propagules that germinate while still attached to the parent tree. Bark yields high-quality tannin for leather and dye. Wood is hard and used for charcoal and construction. The tree is a dominant species of the Sundarbans.
