Identifying and Treating Common Plant Diseases

Why Disease Diagnosis Matters

Catching plant diseases early can mean the difference between a quick recovery and losing the plant entirely. Many diseases spread rapidly once established, so learning to recognize the early signs is one of the most valuable skills any plant parent can develop. Fungal infections alone account for roughly 85% of all plant diseases, followed by bacterial and viral pathogens.

Most Common Plant Diseases

Watch for these frequent offenders:

  • Powdery Mildew — White powdery coating on leaves and stems
  • Root Rot — Mushy brown roots and wilting despite wet soil
  • Leaf Spot — Brown or black spots with yellow halos on foliage
  • Botrytis (Gray Mold) — Fuzzy gray-brown growth on flowers and leaves
  • Rust — Orange, yellow, or brown pustules on leaf undersides
  • Damping Off — Seedlings collapsing at soil level

💡 Tip

Prevention is always easier than treatment. Ensure good air circulation, avoid overhead watering, sterilize tools between plants, and quarantine new additions for at least two weeks.

⚠️ Warning

Never compost diseased plant material. Most home compost piles do not reach temperatures high enough to kill pathogens, which can survive and spread when you use the compost later.
